Description

The 200mm Shinto Saw Rasp is a smart shaping tool for woodworkers who want fast material removal without the rough, torn surface left by many standard rasps. Instead of a solid-cut body, the Shinto uses multiple hardened saw blades arranged in an open diamond pattern. That design helps the tool cut quickly while shedding dust and waste more freely, which reduces clogging during use.

This version combines a medium face and a fine face, making it a practical choice when you want one rasp that can both shape and refine. Use the medium side for controlled stock removal, edge easing, and curve work. Flip to the fine side when you want to smooth the surface further before final sanding.

It suits a wide range of woodworking jobs, including shaping handles, refining curves, easing edges, tuning small parts, and cleaning up bandsawn profiles. The cut feels aggressive enough to move quickly, but still controlled enough for more careful work where a coarse rasp would be too crude.

The elastomer handle offers a secure grip and good control in use, while the slim 200mm format keeps the tool compact and easy to manoeuvre on smaller workpieces.

Why choose a Shinto rasp

Medium and fine cutting faces in one tool

Open saw-tooth construction helps resist clogging

Fast stock removal with better surface quality than many coarse rasps

Useful for shaping timber, curves, handles, edges, and fitted parts

Made in Japan

Best suited to

General woodworking and joinery

Shaping handles and grips

Refining bandsawn curves

Chamfers, edge easing, and contour work

Workshop use where one rasp needs to cover rough and finer shaping

Notes on use

This rasp is best suited to wood and similar workable materials. It is a shaping tool, not a finishing tool, so most users will still follow with abrasives or a finer edge tool if a finished surface is required.

Maintenance

Keep the rasp dry and brush out dust after use. If resin or fine debris builds up, clean it gently with a stiff brush. Store it where the teeth will not rub against other tools, and wipe with a light coat of protective oil if it will be kept for long periods in a humid workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two sides?

One face is medium cut for faster shaping, and the other is fine cut for more controlled refinement and a cleaner surface.

What is a Shinto saw rasp used for?

It is used for shaping and refining timber, especially curves, handles, edges, and small parts where you want faster cutting than sandpaper and more control than a very coarse rasp.

Does it clog like a normal rasp?

The open diamond-pattern construction helps waste clear more easily than many traditional rasps, which is one of the main reasons Shinto rasps are popular.

Is this better than a coarse rasp?

For controlled shaping, often yes. A coarse rasp removes stock faster, but it can leave a rougher surface. This medium and fine version is a better fit when you want cleaner results and more control.

Can it be used on hardwood?

Yes. It works well on both softwood and hardwood, though the feel and speed of cut will vary with species and grain direction.

Is this a finishing tool?

No. It is a shaping and refining tool. For a finished surface, you would usually follow with sanding, a finer rasp, or another edge tool.

Introducing

Shinto, Functional Japanese Toolmaking

Shinto is one of those Japanese tool brands that earns its reputation through utility rather than ceremony. Made in Japan and manufactured by Shinto Kogyo in Miki, Hyogo, the brand is best known for its saw rasps, clever shaping tools that combine fast material removal with a design that stays remarkably clear in use.

Rather than relying on a traditional rasp body, Shinto rasps are built from multiple saw blades joined in an open diamond lattice. The result is a tool that cuts aggressively, sheds waste easily, and gives woodworkers more control during shaping work on curves, edges, handles, and fitted parts.

Founded in 1944, Shinto Kogyo has a long manufacturing background in saws and cutting tools. That engineering-first approach is still visible in the rasp today. It is not a decorative tool or a nostalgia piece. It is a practical workshop tool, designed to work hard, cut cleanly, and keep moving.
